What Do You Want to Be?

Updated: Feb 8

Have you ever been asked the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Do you think anyone ever said, “I just want to be more like Jesus?”

Becoming more Christlike is (or should be) the main goal for every believer, as it reflects God’s will and deepens our relationship with Jesus. Here’s a summary of why every believer should strive to be more Christlike:

1. Following the Example of Jesus

Jesus is our ultimate example of how to live, demonstrating perfect love, humility, obedience to the Father, and selflessness. In 1 Peter 2:21, we are called to “follow in his steps,” as Christ is the perfect model of godly living. Becoming Christlike means reflecting His character and actions in every aspect of our lives.

2. Obedience to God’s Command

The Bible commands believers to imitate Christ and live as He did. In 1 John 2:6, it states, “whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” Becoming more Christlike is not just an option, but a biblical imperative, as it is a sign of true discipleship and faithfulness to God’s call.

3. Reflecting God’s Glory

As we grow in Christlikeness, we reflect God’s glory to the world. In Romans 8:29, Paul writes that God predestined us “to be conformed to the image of his Son.” The more we become like Christ, the more we reflect His love, grace, and holiness, drawing others to Him and bringing glory to God (Matthew 5:16).

4. Spiritual Transformation and Growth

Becoming more Christlike is a process of spiritual transformation. As we seek to live according to His ways, the Holy Spirit works within us to produce the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). This transformation leads to greater peace, joy, and strength in our daily lives. In 2 Corinthians 3:18, we are told that “we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.”

5. Living with Love and Compassion

Christ’s life was marked by love and compassion for others. By becoming more Christlike, we are called to love others sacrificially, just as Jesus loved us (John 13:34-35). This love is not limited to those who are easy to love, but extends to our enemies and those who may persecute us (Matthew 5:44).

6. Fulfillment of God’s Purpose for Us

God’s ultimate purpose for your life is to be conformed to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29). As we grow in Christlikeness, we fulfill God’s purpose for us, becoming the people He created us to be. This process brings greater meaning, satisfaction, and fulfillment as we live in harmony with His will.

7. Eternal Reward

Pursuing Christlikeness is tied to our eternal reward. Jesus promised that those who follow Him faithfully and live according to His ways will be rewarded (Matthew 25:21). Christlikeness reflects a heart that seeks God’s kingdom first and values eternal rewards over temporary pleasures.

Conclusion:

Becoming more Christlike is essential because it reflects obedience to God’s command, deepens our relationship with Him, transforms our lives, and allows us to fulfill our divine purpose. By imitating Christ, we glorify God, live out His love and compassion, and prepare for the eternal rewards He has promised. Striving for Christlikeness is not only beneficial for us but also for those around us, as we become effective witnesses of God’s love and truth in the world.

Just remember, the only Jesus most people will ever see, is the Jesus they see in you.
